A lot has happened since I last updated you! Sorry! Happy Easter - it's a few weeks late but our family did a trip to Mexico over the Easter break and my mind was on trip planning rather than Easter. Check out our garden. It looks like a forest. If you come into the school please come and look at it. You are also welcome to take some dill, our dill plants are huge!
Science We are done are unit on hibernation, adaptation, and migration. The last thing we learned was how Monarch butterflies migrate. It's quite amazing!
Spelling In one syllable words, the y at the end of the word sounds like I. The sight word in this bunch is Why. I don't know why it is spelled this way. Some programs have students learn who, what, where, when and why together to show that they all start with WH. Hopefully most students can commit this word to memory.
We haven't done spelling in a few weeks. We have been doing lots of writing in our journals and story writing and overall I am seeing good sounding out. We will focus on a few more skills in this last stretch and fix some bad spelling habits. You can help by helping your child read and spell long words by paying attention to syllables. Have your child slow down and listen to every syllable and listen for the vowel sound. We have learned most of our vowel chunks to read them, spelling them is bit more difficult. Did you know that every syllable needs a vowel?
Social Studies Thank you for completing the timeline homework with your child. With Easter and crafting, we worked on them slowly at school but now most students are done the timeline project!
Math We are working on measurement. We are learning how to use objects to measure length. For example - how many pencils long is the desk? How many blocks long is your book? We don't use cm and m in grade although we will do a little bit with rulers because it's fun and a good skill for kids to have.
Each morning we do two digit plus two digit addition as a class. Many students have a good understanding of it. You could practice at home by doing simple oral addition either in the car or at meal time. Any little bit helps!
Have a great week!
