Week of January 31

February 13th Telemiracle pledge forms are due. Garden  Did you know we planted sprouts in our classroom? We started them last Tuesday and they grew incredibly fast! We will eat them soon! We haven't learned about plants yet but that will be one of our science units. We are also growing an indoor garden of tomatoes, beans, dill, basil, lettuce and others. I am excited to see our garden grow although most of the plants will take 50 to 70 days to harvest. As the plants begin to grow, we will start to learn the parts of plants and why they grow. Week of January 23rd

 Star student Wynter Blue show and tell Friday, January 27 Family literacy day, muffin morning 8:15 to 8:45. Dress up like a book character or wear clothes with print. Monday, January 30th   No school, teacher prep day. Spelling skill - short I   big, bin, dill, dig, fill, fin, fit, him, his, kit, kiss, pin, rip, sit, tip, tin, win, will, zip,  I was very impressed with our short e spelling test! Thank you for practicing with your child. During our agenda writing we are always talking about spelling rules and we've learned a lot. Have you heard of the FLOSS rule? Short vowel words that end in f, l, s, and z usually have a double letter: buff, stuff, stiff, ball, call, all, hall, bell, tell, shell, bill, hill, full, bull, doll, mess, kiss, boss, etc. It's English so there are always exceptions but it works most of the time. We have talked about the word chunk 'ing' a lot and I will have at least one ing word on our test. We hear that word chunk at the end of...

Star Student Jett Wednesday, January 18th - Eighties Day, Library Thursday, January 19th - Red show and tell. Monday, January 23th - spelling test. Friday, January 27th - Family literacy day. Muffin morning, 8:15 - 8:45. Parents are welcome to come and read with their children. Spelling skill - short e - examples - bed, fed, led, red, den, ten, men, pen, leg, beg, let, net, jet, met, set, end, send, bend, pest, rest, mesh. January has us working hard in grade one! I love January because we see lots of jumps in growth. I've noticed math skills are sticking now and kids are doing well at sight words. Reading is improving bit by bit too! It's amazing how many little bits need to fit together to make little letters become words and sentences and stories.  Spelling and Phonics We are building a solid foundation! I had a lovely Christmas break filled with family, food and too many presents. My kids got spoiled by grandparents and aunties and uncles and we enjoyed seeing everyone. We had dear friends join us for New Years who also have 4 kids the same ages as my kids. It was crazy! and fun. I hope you had a restful Christmas as well. January is a really good month in grade one. We should see lots of growth in reading and spelling. Please help your child at home by reading each evening and practicing sight words often. Ask your child questions about the word chunks we've been learning and the phonics that we are working on.  Phonics  We have worked hard on our short a cvc (consonant - vowel - consonant, ex: cat, ham, mad) words.
