We are 'opening' a classroom grocery store! We will use play money and learn how to buy and make change. For our grocery store we need donated empty boxes, bags and cans. We can also use donated play food too. Please send as soon as possible! This picture is from last year but gives you an idea of what we had. We talked today about what kinds of food we would like in our store. We are leaning towards healthy food but snack food boxes are welcome too.
Parent Teacher interviews are coming soon. They are set for March 14th, 15th in the late afternoon and evening. We will talk about how your child is doing in reading, writing and math primarily. Overall I'm seeing great things! Please book a time via Edsby, the interviews are in person.
Lent We are learning about Lent and our preparation for Easter. During Lent we talk about Giving, Fasting and Prayer. Your child may choose to donate money to a meaningful cause. There are programs like Share Lent that do good around the world. Your child may also choose to fast or give something up for Lent. We don't fast for the sake of fasting, we fast in order to draw closer to God. It might be fun to give up candy or dessert but we should try to make it more meaningful by thinking about our relationship with God. Prayer - as a family you may choose to add prayer to your day, grace before meals or a nighttime prayer is a good way to incorporate prayer into your family life. Also, Catholics are called to give up meat on Fridays during Lent. Our family is not good at following this however I know that meatless meals are more and more encouraged as healthy. Our family tries to do meatless meals occasionally so we may try to follow this more intentionally this year.
Spelling ow/ou. We make up stories for different word chunks, students use these stories to connect sounds to the chunks. Our story for ow and ou is that they don't like to sit next to each other and they pinch. o pinches w, w pinches o and they say 'OW' o pinches u and u pinches o and they say 'OUCH'!
Of course, this is English and these word chunks don't always say ow and ouch but this the most common. Ow commonly comes at the end of a word, ou comes in the middle of a word and never at the end.
If your child is still sounding out letter by letter, start noticing word chunks and sound out chunk by chunk instead. Most students can find word chunks in long words too, practicing sounding out big words with simple word chunks.
Science We will plant our indoor garden soon! We will talk about plants, animals and seasons during our current science unit!
Reading We want students to be at a Level D in reading in March and G in June. You can check your child's take home reading books to see what level your child is at.
Writing Your child should be able to write 3+ sentences relatively independently. Sentences should have 3 or more words. Start with a capital and end with a period. By June, Students must be able to write 5+ sentences relatively independently with capitals and periods and five or more words per sentence. When we meet for interviews, we can talk about your child's writing.
Math We are working hard on adding and subtracting up to 20! We also practice adding up to 100 each morning during our morning meeting. By March, all students should be able to skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s. They should be able to make ten automatically and do adding up to ten automatically. By June, all students should be able to add to 20 and subtract from 20. Skip counting by 3s and 4s is also great to learn to support multiplication.
