Welcome back! January 4 - 13th
I hope you had a restful Christmas as well.
January is a really good month in grade one. We should see lots of growth in reading and spelling. Please help your child at home by reading each evening and practicing sight words often. Ask your child questions about the word chunks we've been learning and the phonics that we are working on.
Phonics We have worked hard on our short a cvc (consonant - vowel - consonant, ex: cat, ham, mad) words. We will review this week and then start short e words. Test your child's knowledge with oral 'spelling tests.' Either you say the word and have your child spell it, or spell the word out loud and have your child say the word. These can be any cvc short a words.
If your child is a confident speller, try bigger words like Canada, Animal, Batman, Fantastic, Badminton Break the words into syllables as you say them for your child to spell: Ca - na - da, An - i - mal. etc. Look for words that have short vowel sounds. Long vowel sounds have different spellings which make them more difficult to sound out and, at this point in grade one, we want to build confidence with the skills we are learning.
Take home reading With all of the absences in December some books have gone missing! Please take a close look at home for take home reading books and Christmas books that belong to the classroom.
Star Student From now to the end of May we will chose a student each week to be our Star Student. This comes with big responsibilities! Our Star Student will be our line leader and may be given special tasks by Mrs. Elder. The Star Student will also complete an All About Me poster at home. On Wednesday of your child's star student week we will share the poster and your child will tell us all about themselves.
Sharing Each week on Thursdays, four students are invited to bring one show and share item to share with classmates. Please help your child choose something meaningful to share. This is a nice chance for students to share something that is important to them. Please practice with your child so they feel confident sharing their item with the class.
Religion / Social Studies We are learning about family celebrations and traditions. Next week I will send home a little assignment for your child to complete with you. You child will interview at least two family members about their favourite celebration or tradition. I have sheets that your child can fill in but bonus points for a short interview video that we could share with the class!
