Hi Parents,

Happy Winter! My family had a crazy weekend which included a flat tire near Chaplin heading home on Friday. Then Saturday my older two kids, nephew, sister and my mom were storm stayed in Moose Jaw! 

We have a quieter week which usually makes for a good learning week! We'll see how it goes as we get closer to halloween!

Reading readiness: Phonological Awareness 

Phonological awareness are skills that kids need to learn to read. These are things that, when we went to school, we did without being explicitly taught. In class we do many oral activities that promote these skills and you can do them at home as well!

    Your child can rhyme. If you say bat, your child can come up with a rhyming word like hat. 

    Your child understands word boundaries. If you say the sentence Don’t let the cat out, your child is able to separate the sentence into five individual words. 

    Your child can clap syllables. If you say dog, your child knows to clap once. If you say umbrella, your child knows to clap three times. 

    Your child can blend sounds to make a word. If you say the sounds sh...eep, your child responds with the word sheep. 

    Your child can identify the beginning sound in a word. If you ask your child to say the first sound in pig, your child is able to respond with the sound /p/. 

    Your child can identify the ending sound in a word. If you ask your child to say the last sound in the word jam, your child is able to respond with the sound /m/.

Science - Thank you for sending your smell homework, we had fun smelling and guessing. Some were pretty stinky! 

Math - We are learning about shapes and tally marks. Please practice tally marks with your child! 

Halloween - We will decorate cookies on Monday after lunch. After our last recess we will go to the gym for a costume parade with the whole school!

Week of May 29th

Wednesday, May 31 - School assembly Friday, June 2 - Jump Rope for Heart Thursday, June 15 - Grade one Field Trip to Docs Town and SS Park. Spelling - numbers - one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Field Trip - June 15th. We are so excited to have a wonderful field trip. We are looking for parents to join us. Two parent helpers would be great but more would be welcome. We will leave the school at 9:15 and arrive at Doc's Town around 9:30. We will have a guided tour of Doc's Town. At 11:00 we will walk to the Southside (Riverside) Park. The kids will play and then we will eat lunch. In the afternoon we will break into groups and do some fun activities.  Jump Rope for Heart - You can donate online. Go to the Jump Rope for Heart website and search for our school.  Star student Wynter Blue show and tell Friday, January 27 Family literacy day, muffin morning 8:15 to 8:45. Dress up like a book character or wear clothes with print. Monday, January 30th   No school, teacher prep day. Spelling skill - short I   big, bin, dill, dig, fill, fin, fit, him, his, kit, kiss, pin, rip, sit, tip, tin, win, will, zip,  I was very impressed with our short e spelling test! Thank you for practicing with your child. During our agenda writing we are always talking about spelling rules and we've learned a lot. Have you heard of the FLOSS rule? Short vowel words that end in f, l, s, and z usually have a double letter: buff, stuff, stiff, ball, call, all, hall, bell, tell, shell, bill, hill, full, bull, doll, mess, kiss, boss, etc. It's English so there are always exceptions but it works most of the time.
