Welcome to Grade One!
I hope you have had a wonderful summer. Our family kept busy with camping, a week in Calgary and fun in and around town too. My name is Heather Elder, I have been teaching for fifteen years and the last three have been in grade one. I have also taught grade four, six and three as a homeroom teacher and have taught everything from kindergarten phys. ed. to high school Christian Ethics. My husband, Trevor, and I have four kids, Rachel is going into grade four, Joshua is going into grade two, Levi is starting kindergarten and Avah is 3! They certainly keep us busy but they are pretty great kids!
I am so excited to meet your children! Grade one is a really big year! I started teaching grade one when my daughter, Rachel, was in grade one and now Joshua has completed grade one as well. I have both mom and teacher experience and I will share with you tips and tricks that work with our family along the way. I want for your child the same as I want for my children - joy in learning, happiness and sharing kindness.
Your child will have amazing growth as a learner this year. Grade one students go from non readers to some children reading small chapter books. Students will also go from non writers to writing full and complete sentences with many interesting words and ideas. Our classroom is a rich learning environment and I hope your home is as well. I will give you ideas on how to extend learning from the classroom to home as well. My first suggestion; please read to your child daily if possible!
Thank you for trusting your child with me! We will have lots of fun in grade one and I am looking forward to a great year.
