Garden Did you know we planted sprouts in our classroom? We started them last Tuesday and they grew incredibly fast! We will eat them soon! We haven't learned about plants yet but that will be one of our science units. We are also growing an indoor garden of tomatoes, beans, dill, basil, lettuce and others. I am excited to see our garden grow although most of the plants will take 50 to 70 days to harvest. As the plants begin to grow, we will start to learn the parts of plants and why they grow.
Spelling short o box, cob, dot, dog, fog, got, hot, job, jog, lot, mom, mop, not, pop, pot, rot, top, tot, frog, stop, shop, stop, chop, rock, lock, shock.
I am seeing great things on the spelling tests! Students are spelling three letter words with no problem and longer words are hit or miss for some students but overall I'm quite happy with results. Students will only get better at spelling with practice and so we will continue to practice and support and encourage! After we complete our short vowels (next is /u/) we will move on to word chunks like ow/ou (cow, ouch) , ee/ea, ai/ay, aw/au, igh, ch, sh, th. We will try some short words that end in -y like fly, by, try, spy, too.
When students have a good handle on word chunks, they can read almost anything!
Social Studies Thank you for doing those little interviews with your children! We shared them with the class and it was interesting. Now we are creating a classroom book about family traditions. I'll share it when it is completed.
Math We are ready for new math worksheets and I am so impressed with math skills that students have! Please continue to practice skip counting and please play board games and card games with your child! These games are great for counting but also taking turns and practicing encouraging words. One skill we haven't focussed on yet, although we do it orally, is subtraction. Please practice oral subtraction with your child. For example, cut up veggies and ask, if I start with 10 cut carrots and eat six, how many are left? By the end of grade one, students should be able to fluently add and subtract up to 20.
ELA Students are writing a story! The story needs characters, a setting, a problem and a solution. Most are working in partners and we are hoping to turn the stories in puppet shows. Most have a good start and are excited about what they are writing!
100th Day of School We celebrate the 100th day of school in grade one! Students may come to school dressed up like they are a hundred. We will practice counting to 100, we will play games and we will read stories. We have a little activity planned with the other grade one classes as well!
Have a great week!
