Spelling - Short u Our short o test was a success! Most students spelled the three letter o words correctly, there were mistakes on our longer words but we know what to work towards.
Short u words include: bug, bun, but, bus, cup, cut, duck, dust, fun, gum, hug, jug, luck, mud, mug, nut, pup, puff, rush, rust, rug, run, us, up, such, tub, yuck.
I may chose words from this list or from our phonics book. The first 6 or 7 will be three letter words and the last 3 or 4 will be longer words, four or five letters. Consider the last few words to be bonus words.
There are lots of short u words that are not spelled with a single u! Done, none, blood, son, among. English is tuff! (See what I did there? Ps. Tough is really hard to spell.) And there are a surprising number of words that should be short u but just aren't. Push, full, pull, put, and who decided to spell 'busy' with a u?
Garden We grew sprouts! We grew red radish, popcorn, buckwheat and sunflowers. Everyone tried the sprouts and most kids liked them. We also shared with our grade four friends and our grade one friends! We are also excited to start growing our big indoor garden. Our big garden with ripen over a longer time frame, most of our plants will take 50 to 60 days to mature so our hope is to harvest after Easter.
Telemiracle Students and families are encouraged to support Telemiracle. You can read the note that went home last week for more information.
Social Studies We are learning a bit more about Pow Wows and First Nations traditions. The kids liked watching a video about a boy teaching us how to dance and showing us around a Pow Wow.
100th Day of School We will do some fun activities with the other grade ones on Friday. We will read stories, do lots of counting and some crafting too!
Reading I am quite impressed with how well students are doing at reading! Mrs. Gardiner reads with students each morning and we are seeing nice improvements! Keep up the good work.
- Remind your child to finger track (follow under the words with their finger.)
- Ask comprehension questions, ask your child to retell what they've read. Ask them to predict what will happen next. Ask if the story reminds them of anything else. Making connections helps your child build reading skills.
- Practice reading with a speaking voice rather than a robot voice. Model what that sounds like.
Thank you for reading with your child!
