Happy Valentines Day!

Star Student Bentyn

Tuesday, February 14th - Valentines Day, Wear pink, red and white!

Thursday, February 16th - Mass, 10:30 in the gym. Green shares

Friday, February 17th - Pink Shirt Day for bullying awareness. Pancake breakfast for students.

Next Week - No school!

Our hundredth day of school was a blast! We counted to 100 many times! We counted Froot Loops, blocks, pasta, popsicle sticks and anything we could find. We are 100 days smarter too! We talked about the things we know now that we didn't know at the beginning of grade one. We can read, write, spell, add, count. The list goes on. We also talked about what school looked like 100 years ago. I didn't feel old until I realized that my Grandma would have been in grade 1 about 95 years ago! But I think the biggest changes have happened in the past 10 years. We talked about chalk boards, one room schools, riding a horse to school and clothing differences.

Lent and Pancakes. Lent begins next Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent and it is common for Catholics to eat pancakes. The idea is that Lent is time for doing without so our last day before Lent is full of tasty, sweet pancakes, bacon, eggs and cream. We always do a Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast with students but this year it lands during the break so we are sharing pancakes on this Friday instead. It will not be a filling breakfast, rather, a tasty treat.

Ash Wednesday We also always do an Ash Wednesday service for students but again, it will be next week. Instead we are having Mass at the school on Thursday. You are welcome to join us if you are around. I encourage you to attend the service at Christ the Redeemer if you are around next week. I find it a nice way to enter the Lenten season and to get my heart in the right place.

Pink Shirt Day Students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt for bullying awareness. We will learn the story of Pink Shirt Day and we will talk about ways to make other feel welcome and how to identify bullying behaviour.

Spelling I am impressed with spelling! The most difficult part for most students is blending consonants together like sh, th, ch, but also st, sn, bl, cl, tr, gr, br, etc. When you are reading with your child, pause sometimes and say each consonant sound. Grand - g - r - a - n - d. Spent  s - p - e - n - t. Etc. ch, sh, th are one sound and cannot be broken. Chat - ch - a - t, shout - sh - ou - t. When you take time to notice letter sounds, your child will more likely listen for them as well!

Reading Keep it up! Thank you for reading each evening. Please communicate with me if you have any questions or concerns about reading. I am happy with the progress I am seeing. Every little bit of reading is making new connections in your child's brain! Look at how much we've learned in 100 days!
